Kenneth Bonamo Named Principal of Townsend Harris High School at Queens College
Kenneth Bonamo, a veteran teacher of Russian and history, including Advanced Placement government and politics, last week was named as the new principal of Townsend Harris High School at Queens College, New York City's premiere humanities high school and one of the nation's highest-ranked secondary schools. Mr. Bonamo, who is currently the assistant principal for humanities at Staten Island Technical High School, will succeed Principal Thomas Cunningham, who is retiring at the end of this school year after a long, distinguished career in the New York City public school system. Townsend Harris wins INTEL SCHOOLS OF DISTINCTION AWARD
The Intel Schools of Distinction Program award winners were announced this morning, and Townsend Harris H.S. was selected as this year’ s School of Distinction for high school Science and will receive a $10,000 cash award. Townsend Harris is the only high school in the country to receive this award! For further details see the news release

Mock Trial Team Becomes Queens Champions
Congratulations to The Townsend Harris Mock Trial Team and their advisor, Susan Getting, for becoming the Queens Borough Champions in the Justice Resource Centers Mock Trial Competition and continuing on to the city wide quarter finals.  


Townsend Harris Students Awarded Honors in Quality of Life Competition
The Townsend Harris Alumni Association proudly congratulates the school's 2008 Quality of Life Scholarhship finalist, Gabriel Felder, on his project "Sight for Independence: Empowering the Elderly." We also congratulate the school's three semifinalists:  Javeria Ashraf ("The Locus of Control for African American and Hispanic Male Students’ Decision to Drop Out of High School"), Laura Dolabela ("Parental Awareness of Internet Security for Children") and Kayla Hollins ("Feelings of Security Among Senior Citizens in Relationship to Cell Phone Usage").  22 semi-finalists were selected from over 500 entries citywide. Kudos to Mr. Franco Scardino, faculty advisor.


Townsend Harris Students Dominate Language Competitions
The Townsend Harris Alumni Association congratulates 3rd-year Japanese student Sandra Villayi, one of nine finalists in the NECTJ Japanese Speech Contest.  Three teams competed in the National Japan Bowl in Washington DC this year: The school's 2nd-year team, Warren K. Cheng, Mandy Trinh and Peter Li placed 10th; the school's 3rd-year team, Sandra Villanyi, Reena Sam and Carmen Lin placed 9th and our 4th-year team, Jose Pulido and Deborah Chang placed the 8th nationwide.  


Obituary: Warren Cowan, Class of 1937
We regret to report that Warren Cowan '37 passed away on May 14, 2008.  Mr. Cowan was a renowned publicist, representing celebrities such as Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and Ronald Reagan. He was 87 years old.  Read more

Obituary: Robert Jastrow '41
Robert Jastrow (TH Class of 1941), who led a major space science institution and helped to bring space down to earth for millions of Americans, died Friday at his home in Arlington, Va. He was 82.  Read more.

Hasan Zaman, Class of 2005, Dies at Age 20

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Hasan Zaman of the Class of 2005.  Hasan was killed in an automobile accident this past weekend. Hasan was 20 years old.  A prayer service for Hasan was held this past Sunday evening. Condolences and notes of memories may be sent to the Zaman family at 61 Harris Avenue, Hewlett, New York 11557. Annual THAA Florida Chapter Breakfast: Thursday, March 13
The Florida Chapter of the Townsend Harris Alumni Association will host its annual Spring Breakfast on Thursday, March 13. The breakfast will start at 9:30 A.M. THHS Senior Amy Wang wins prestigous American Airlines Award
Amy Wang, a senior at Townsend Harris, recently was selected as an American Airlines College Tour Competition winner after her participation in the NYC GirlsREACH program. Amy, a resident of Fresh Meadows, has been highly active in school. Among the organizations that she has been involved with are Key Club, ARISTA, and Seekers Club. She is part of the school’s newspaper, The Classic, and is an honors student. Read more.

Larry Treff '42 Passes Away

On Monday, November 19 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Townsend Harris will host its annual "Open House." This important event showcases our extraordinary school to prospective applicants and their families; in the past over 1,000 people have attended each night.  The high school is looking for volunteers to lead walking tours of the building. Townsend Harris High School was the most sought after NYC public high school according to NYC Department of Education statistics. Almost 3,500 eighth-grade students listed THHS as their first choice for Fall 2007 admission - 800 more than Midwood High School in Brooklyn, the second-most sought after school. Read more.

Class of 1990 Graduate Appointed to Key NYC Education Post
New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein today appointed Martine Guerrier, Townsend Harris Class of 1990, as the City’s first ever Chief Family Engagement Officer as part of their plan to launch new strategies to strengthen the Administration’s efforts to engage public school parents and families throughout New York City. We have planned a buffet breakfast meeting for all pre-1944 graduates at 10:00 AM on Friday morning May 25th at the Newman Conference Center on the 7th Floor of the Baruch Library and Technology Center at 151 East 25th Street. We are keeping it simple: just orange juice, bagels, cream cheese, smoked salmon (lox to those who may or may not have studied Latin) and coffee or tea. More info.

Join us for our next alumni social gathering: bowling! We will be gathering to bowl at Harlem Lanes, located at 2116 Adam Clayton Blvd. in Manhattan.  The event will take place on Friday evening, January 5 from 7 to 9 P.M. Townsend Harris Students Unite for Darfur
More than 100 teen activists from Townsend Harris High School gathered in Manhattan Sunday to protest the atrocities occurring in Darfur, Sudan.  Coinciding with the opening of the 61st General Assembly of the United Nations, the young adults partnered with other activists from around New York and beyond and demonstrated their global commitment to protect the people of Darfur. City College to Honor Townsend Harris' Anniversary
Every year, the Japanese send a delegation to the City College to honor the memory of Townsend Harris. This year is special. It is the 20th anniversary of the rededication of the Harris grave site in Green Wood Cemetery and 150th anniversary of his landing in Japan. Boris Kostelanetz of the Class of 1928 passed away on January 31, 2006. Mr. Kostelanetz, considered the dean of tax attorneys in the United States, was 94. Read more

Townsend Harris Mourns Edward Hall '31

We regretfully report the passing of Ed Hall '31, who died on January 15 at the age of 91.  Mr. Hall was a prominent engineer who helped develop various missle programs for the United States. Read more

Four Townsend Harris Students Named Intel Semi-Finalists
Thirty-one students at New York City high schools were designated semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search. Among the semifinalists were four Townsend Harris students. This year's field was chosen from more than 1,500 entries worldwide. Read more.

Maurice Paprin '36, longtime Alumni Association board member and noted real estate entrepreneur, passed away on Saturday, November 25 at the age of 85. Read more.

Obituary: Victor Wouk '35
The Townsend Harris family mourns the passing of Victor Wouk '35.  An electrical engineer and entrepreneur who funded and developed the first full-size version of the modern hybrid car in the 1970s and continued to be an advocate for the development of automobiles powered by both electricity and gasoline, Mr. Wouk was 86. Townsend Harris Centennial Gala a Huge Success
The Townsend Harris Centennial Gala, held November 5 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan, was a huge success.  Over 400 alumni, students, faculty, parents and friends all gathered to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the school and 20th anniversary of the reopening of the school.  Click here for pictures.


Townsend Harris Students Named Intel Semi-Finalists
The Intel Science Talent Search announced in January that nine Queens high school students were named semifinalists in the prestigious competition. Two THHS students, Maria Wojakaski and Padmavati Sridar, were chosen. Read more


Townsend Harris Student Chosen as Top Youth Volunteer
Kimberly Manis, a current Townsend Harris student, was chosen as one of America's 104 most outstanding youth volunteers.  The volunteers -- two from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico -- were named State Honorees by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for exemplary acts of volunteerism. The awards program, now in its 10th year, is conducted by Prudential Financial, Inc. in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Read more.


Obituary: Alvin Dobsevage '38
The Townsend Harris family mourns the death of alumni and longtime board member Alvin Dobsevage, who died on February 26, 2005.  A WWII 10th Mountain Division veteran, a linguist, Latin scholar and educator, he is mourned by Ruth, Michael and Sarah Dobsevage; Gertrude, Irving and Robert Diskin; Beth Dobsevage; Dr. Tina Dobsevage, Dr. Jonathan House, and Antonia and Gregory House. Townsend Harris High School named 2004 21st Century School of Distinction
On June 21, Townsend Harris was among twenty schools to receive the 21st Century Schools of Distinction Award, a national award program created by Intel Corporation, Scholastic Inc., and the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Foundation, to recognize the finest public and private K–12 schools in the United States. Townsend Harris HS 2004 Founders' Day: Friday, October 29
The 2004 Founders' Day ceremony will be held on Friday, October 29. The day will begin with alumni sharing their Townsend Harris experiences with current students, which will be followed by the annual ceremony in the Colden Auditorium at Queens College. As part of the Founders' Day celebration this year, the high school has requested alumni volunteers to speak to current students during classroom sessions prior to the ceremony at Colden Auditorium. Townsend Harris Alum Named Queens Borough Poet Laureate
Ishle Yi Park of the Townsend Harris Class of 1995 has been named Queens County's first female poet laureate, beating out a field of more than 75 applicants.  Read more.    


"Monday Night at the Movies": Monday, August 9

Join us on Monday evening, August 9, 2004 starting at 6:00 PM at the upper terrace area of Bryant Park.

 

Frank Capra's classic "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" will be playing and is an interesting selection for the HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival especially in this political year. This heart-warming drama is about a crusading freshman politician, starring the venerable James Stewart, doing battle with the forces of evil in a corrupt government. This movie runs 129 minutes and begins at dusk.

Obituary: Dr. Philip Holzman '39
The Townsend Harris family mourns the death of prominent alumni, Philip S. Holzman, on June 1, 2004.  Dr. Holzman was a key Scientific Council member of the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression.  Read more.  


Obituary: Jeremiah Gutman '39

The Townsend Harris family mourns the passing of noted civil rights attorney Jeremiah Gutman '39.  Mr. Gutman passed away in February 2004.  Read more. 

 

There will be a memorial service for Mr. Gutman on Monday, June 14th at 6:00 PM at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, 40 West 68th Street in Manhattan. 




Townsend Harris HS Baccalaureate: Thursday, June 3rd

It is with great regret that we announce the passing of Bernice Horowitz, 80.  Mrs. Horowitz was the long-time Assistant Principal of the Townsend Harris Humanities Department, and played an instrumental role in the development of Townsend Harris.  Mrs. Horowitz, mother to two daughters and grandmother to two grandchildren, died on March 26.

Hayley Samantha Thomas, a member of the class of 1989 and assistant dean and acting director of institutional diversity at Bryn Mawr College, died on March 20 in New York City. Dr. Thomas was diagnosed with stomach cancer at the end of January. She was 32.  Read more.

Obituary: Lester Dundes '31
Lester Dundes, who as the publisher of Interior Design Magazine for more than 45 years was a major force in helping to transform interior design from a hobby of the rich into a mainstream profession, died on March 13 at his home in Water Mill, N.Y., according to his daughter Kate Shattan. He was 90 and a member of the THHS Class of 1931.  Read more.

A Visit to the Frick Collection: Jan. 16, 2004
Located on Fifth Avenue and 70th Street, the Frick Mansion houses the private art collection of Henry Clay Frick, successful steel and railroad tycoon. His mansion has been transformed into 16 galleries but retains its residential ambience, which provides visitors with a unique access to these masterpieces from the great European and American artists.  Eclectic and impressive only begin to describe the Frick Collection.  General admission includes a self-managed audio tour.  A cash wine bar is available in the Garden Court after 6:30 PM, where we plan to congregate after viewing the collection.  R.S.V.P. at specialevents@thaa.org. Louis Orzack '40, a member of the THAA Hall of Fame and longtime member of THAA Board of Directors, died this week. Prof. Orzack was a scholar, author and educator who spent his long career studying the organization of professions and professional services in different societies and the impact of regional and global trade agreements on professions. He was emeritus professor of sociology and public administration at Rutgers University. Prof. Orzack received his B.S. at City College, M.A. at Columbia and PhD at Indiana University. He lectured at universities throughout the world.

Prof. Orzack's family will be sitting shiva on Wednesday night, Dec. 3, at Congregation B'Nai Shalom in Westborough, Mass. from 6 pm to 9 pm. A memorial service is being planned for a later date.

Museum of Jewish Heritage Exhibit: Ours to Fight For
Update: On Veterans Day, November 11, 2003, the Museum of Jewish Heritage at Battery Park has its inaugural exhibition at the Robert M. Morgenthau Wing. The first program is entitled "Ours to Fight For" which explores the roles of Jewish men and women in World War II. Judge Bentley Kassal '33 was in World War II in the Army Air Corps and was overseas for 30 months as an air combat intelligence officer. The museum will exhibit Kassal's photo, among others, taken at the Arc De Triomphe on May 7, 1945, the day of the German surrender. Read more...

Townsend Harris Alumni Association Mourns Lois Polansky
The Alumni Association is deeply saddened to report the death of Lois Polansky, a former art teacher at Townsend Harris High School, and extends its deepest sympathies to her family, friends and former colleagues and students. The authorities have ruled her death a suicide. Ms. Polansky had been missing since early July.

Successful Class of '88 15th Year Reunion
The 15th Year Reunion for the Class of '88 was a success at Connelly's Bar and Restaurant. She was last seen o­n Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at approximately 9:20 AM making a deposit inside the GreenPoint Bank branch located at 1145 Willis Avenue in Albertson, New York (near Roslyn).

E-Z Pass records show that Ms. Polansky's car, crossed North bound over the Throgs Neck Bridge at 9:56 AM o­n Tuesday, July 1.

There have been no further leads as to her whereabouts after crossing the Throgs Neck Bridge and it is not known if her vehicle headed towards I-95 North (New England) or I-95 South (Bronx / George Washington Bridge).

Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Ms.Polansky or who has seen her vehicle, are asked to call the Nassau County Police Dept.at 516-573-5370.

Rachel M. Brown '02 has been selected as an official entrant in the Miss New York USA pageant. To compete, Rachel needs private sponsors to cover her pageant entrance fee. She is seeking to raise $899. If Rachel wins the Miss New York USA pageant in Albany, she will be the state's representative in the Miss USA pageaent. Dr. Samantha Butts '90 Featured on
Dr. Samantha Butts '90, an obstetrician at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia, was featured recently o­n the Discovery Health Channel's "Birth Day," a series that documents childbirths around the country. Dr. Butts was shown delivering twins as part of a show o­n the rising number of multiple births.


Class of 1997 Reunion (Part II...): Saturday, March 6

The Class of 1997 will have a reunion on Saturday, March 6 beginning at 9 PM at Rondure on Prince Street in Manhattan. Because of the inclement weather on the night of the reunion last Fall, many alumni thought a second "unofficial" reunion would be a nice idea.  Read more...

THAA Mourns the Death of Malcolm Rossman
The Alumni Association is deeply saddened to report that Malcolm Rossman, the longtime assistant principal for organization of Townsend Harris High School, died unexpectedly o­n Tuesday, Feb. 4. Mr. Rossman was a dedicated educator who was committed to the success of Townsend Harris High School and its students. The Alumni Association mourns the passing this dear friend. A funeral service was held o­n Thursday, Feb. 6 at 9 am at Sinai Chapels.


THAA Creates Malcolm Mark Rossman Memorial Fund
At the request of Malcolm Mark Rossman's family, the THAA has established the Malcolm Mark Rossman Memorial Fund to accept donations in his honor and memory. At his funeral, the family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to support the high school to which Mr. Rossman had been so dedicated. A notification of each contribution to the fund will be sent to the Rossman family.

Graphic Designers Needed
Are you interested in graphic design, looking to expand your portfolio or gain experience in art and photo research and acquisition? The alumni association needs people to help with the layout and design of THAM and the alumni newsletter. Each publication comes out twice a year. We are developing templates for THAM, and need someone to develop templates for the newsletter. All work is voluntary, but professional references and mentoring are a possibility; experience to add to your resume is a certainty.

NYC Science Fair Seeks Volunteer Judges
The New York City Science Fair is requesting alumni volunteers who would like to serve as judges. The fair will be held o­n Wednesday, March 19, 2003 from 9 am to 1 pm at the Brooklyn Marriott, 300 Adams Street in downtown Brooklyn. Breakfast and lunch are included.

Judges must be a college graduate with a major in any science including the behavioral sciences, math, computers or engineering.

To be a member in good standing, you must pay your Alumni Dues for 2002 and your member profile must be up to date. Profile updates submitted since Jan. 1, 2002 are considered to be current and up to date.

The 2002 Dues Statements were sent by regular postal mail in late May. If you did not receive a statement or if you are not certain if you paid your dues, e-mail thaa@thaa.org

At a meeting at the Cafe des Artistes, Charles Sigety '39 presented a $50,000 check to Townsend Harris Principal Tom Cunningham and Alumni Association Treasurer Craig Slutzkin '91. The check was the first installment of a landmark $250,000 gift by the Sigety Family Foundation to the Townsend Harris Forever! campaign. The gift will support faculty development, sponsoring advanced training and other special programs for Townsend Harris teachers and staff.
