About the Townsend Harris Alumni Association Inc.
The Townsend
Harris Alumni Association Inc. represents more than 3,800 graduates
of Townsend Harris Hall, Townsend Harris High School and Townsend
Harris High School at Queens College. The association is a nonprofit
corporation chartered in the State of New York.
The association's history dates to
1979 when Irving Gerber, member of the Class of 1943, began placing
advertisements in major newspapers in search of fellow alumni of
Townsend Harris High School, which was closed by Mayor Fiorello
LaGuardia in 1942.
Management of the association rests with a Board
of Directors, which meets monthly from September through June
in New York City. The board is elected at an annual
meeting of the general membership traditionally held in June.
The association's bylaws
were first adopted in 1983. The association also maintains regional
chapters in Florida, California, Massachusetts Land.
In September 1984, thanks to the efforts of members of the alumni
association, Townsend Harris High School reopened in Queens dedicated,
like its predecessors, to academically gifted students and a rigorous
curriculum rooted in the classics and the humanities.
In June 1988, with the graduation of the first class from Townsend
Harris High School at Queens College, the Townsend Harris Alumni
Association welcomed its first new members in 44 years. And the
association's membership has continued to grow with each graduating
class.
As part of its core mission, the alumni association has continued
to work diligently in support of the high school and the association
administers numerous scholarships for the benefit of Townsend Harris
graduates.
The association
is also committed to cultivating social intercourse and fraternity
among its members, through numerous events and activities including
class reunions. Members of the association pay annual
dues of $25, which are reduced to $10 for new members during
their college years.
The alumni association publishes the Townsend
Harris Alumni Magazine (THAM) and a newsletter,
which are distributed to members and also maintains a printed and
electronic member directory.
The association also has established a Hall
of Fame to recognize its most accomplished members.
The association's offices are located in the high school building
at:
149-11 Melbourne Avenue
Flushing, NY 11367
Correspondence may also be directed to the association's executive
secretary at secretary@thaa.org.
